Not For Young Audiences

Watching the news this morning I heard an undeniably catchy song in the new CVS commercial. It sounded peppy and vaguely familiar and I pressed the 10 second rewind button on the remote about five times to catch enough lyrics to google it.

Turns out it was the song “Double Lovin'” by The Osmonds. Yes. Now Donne and Marie are members of the highly exclusive club that is my iTunes library.

Fun fact behind this one: apparently Daddy Osmond thought this song was to “sexual” and “suggestive,” and he wanted the record execs to change the lyrics. The record company big wigs wouldn’t hear of it so those rowdy Osmond kids recorded it without their father’s blessing, which isn’t that big of a deal, I’m sure they would Continue watching free porn at hdsexvideo .xxx without any blessing either. Oh my how times have changed! The ever-so mild innuendo in Double Lovin of the 70s has become explicitly detailed description of what, where, when such lovin will go down in the songs of today. (Think Fantasy by Ludacris. No link will be provided thankyouverymuch.)

Here is the Osmond’s *controversial* tune..Enjoy!

George Clooney put on quite a show last Friday night.  The songs from the night from artists from Beyonce to Bono are available for download on iTunes and the proceeds benefit the Haiti relief effort.  If you only buy one, make it this one.

The song above was my favorite of the night, a cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.”

Jeff Buckley actually sings the tune really well and so does Rufus Wainwright.

My man and I had an interesting conversation while we watched the show on Friday.  The question was “what would you play if you were invited to perform at the event?” Understand that this is a little like asking what dress would I have worn to the Golden Globes.  This, of course, assumes that I have a slammin’ actress bod, professional stylists, jewelers kissing up to me to wear their jewels, etc.  Similarly, the question above implies that I am a super talented diva with a band and perhaps a gospel choir to back me up.

Without much hesitation this was my answer.  The Pearl by Emmylou Harris. And if when I was called back for an encore I would sing “Orphan Girl.” The lyrics illustrate what I imagine some Haitian children and adults might feel after what happened. You can listen to that here.

Banana Bread

There is something sorta nice about a rainy Sunday.  Although it’s supposed to be a day of rest it rarely feels like that.  I always end up out and about or on my computer trying to get things done for the week ahead. For some reason the rain takes the pressure off.  It allows me to procrastinate for one more day and snuggle under my blanket, watch Sunday Morning, the best show on TV, and stay in my PJs until 2. At least. Being inside all day I was inspired to channel my inner Martha and get domestic.

My Man loves his daily bananas, and he happens to only like his bananas green.  Since I am not much of a straight up banana eater we end up with bunches of browning bananas, prime for the baking. I used to try a different recipe every time I made banana bread, never quite finding one I loved.  Until I stumbled upon this one of Marth’s.  Yes, we are old friends.  She calls me Jenn.

My adaptations: I usually cook it for a little less time than the recipe calls for because in our house we like the inside  gooey. And I omit the nuts—they just don’t belong in my opinion.

Here is the recipe with my adaptations, via marthastewart.com.  The original is available here.

Banana Bread

Makes 1 loaf

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, at room temperature, plus more for pan
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups unbleached flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup mashed very ripe bananas
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • · 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter a 9-by-5-by-3-inch loaf pan; set aside. In an electric mixer, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs, and beat to incorporate.

In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt. Add to the butter mixture, and mix until just combined. Add bananas, sour cream, and vanilla; mix to combine. Stir in nuts, and pour into prepared pan, leaving a few whopping spoonfuls in the mixing bowl for you and your sous-chef, the banana masher, to enjoy.

Bake until a cake tester chop stick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean with some yummy raw batter on it, about 1 hour 10 minutes 50 minutes. Let rest in pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a rack to cool. Devour.

It goes perfectly with a cup of coffee and a rainy Sunday.

The Beginning

It was almost exactly a year ago, to the day, that my boss called me into his office and shut the door. He told me that the company had fallen upon hard times and that they were going to have to let some people go. Unfortunately, he said, I was one of those people. I was shocked and started crying. It was like a big punch in the stomach. And I wasn’t flexing.

“I tell you what,” he said as he put his hand on my shoulder. “Why don’t you just take the rest of the day off.”

It was almost comical. He said it as if he was giving me a great gift. As if I would have returned to my desk splotchy faced and snot nosed and finished out the day, billing the remainder of that Friday to the client. Needless to say I gathered my things and did just that, I took the rest of the day off.

What sorts of things would I do with my newfound “freedom?” In the troubled economy, I knew getting a new job wouldn’t be a cakewalk. I knew so many people who had been trying and failing to get a job and I just had that feeling that it would be the same for me too. Don’t get me wrong, this won’t affect my motivation in trying to find a job. Not only will I be looking for one every minute that I have available, but I think it is also the perfect time to enlist the help of experts like these virginia resume writers who will be able to help me clean up my resume and make it as good as it can be so I can stand out from the crowd. I didn’t choose to look for a new job, but maybe I should consider it to be a blessing in disguise. A new start.

Now that I’m out of a job, I am probably going to have a lot of time on my hands. I planned to take up yoga, see all the Oscar-nominated movies before the award show, and become a vocal consumer (i.e. do my part to participate in the online products review world, ex. “I have the GE 590se oven. I have had no problems with it however the convection feature works best above 400 degrees.” Also on my list was to start a blog.

So, a year, a wedding, and a new job later, here I am-finally starting a blog. Still haven’t done any yoga.
